World Wide Standards

Last week, in Australia, marked one of the largest Web Standards Conferences in the southern hemisphere and probrably the world. The gurus in web design and World Wide Web Standards were all present and the crowds were huge. My good friend, Amit Karmakar, was there and kept those of us not in attendance totally informed. Brillant job Amit so take a look at his weblog for complete details.

This got me to thinking about standards in other areas as well. While traveling around and meeting people in other countries, I was struck by their frustrations at the job market in their new country of choice. Many of my friends, and others I met along the way, have advanced degrees and were professionals in their native country but in their new country ending up working as a laborer and not being allowed to practice their chosen fields.

Many times I would find myself face to face with a doctor or lawyer from India, Pakistan, Kuwait, or someplace else tending bar in a pub or selling me a coke in a 7-11 store. Now nothing wrong with those jobs but come on now. If there were world wide standards of education then maybe, just maybe our world views of immigrants would be more positive? I think maybe even in their own countries they would be able to offer better services if they had the same degree as those in 1st world countries. Well, I could be wrong but I sure think we all should give it a try.
