Maysville School Wins County Battle of the Books
The Maysville Elementary School Battle of the Books team brought home the winning trophy from the Jones County competition on April 27, 2005. Three of the four elementary schools in Jones County, North Carolina participated in the countywide competition. Battle of the Books is a nationally recognized reading program promoting literacy with a healthy competitive edge.
Typically a Middle School event, the program now reaches more students because an elementary school reading list was developed. Teams read ten novels and then are asked questions in this fashion.
“In which book is a character afraid of the dark and will not sleep without a lit candle?”
Answers are given in two parts. One answer is the title of the book and the other answer is the name of the author. Each round of questioning consists of twenty questions with each team answering ten out of the twenty. Comfort Elementary and Trenton Elementary tied for second place with 86 points while Maysville “brought home the bacon” with 98 points. Congratulations to the winning team members: Alysha, Zack, April, Reaquandra, Myesha, Shanique, Destini, and the coaches Nancy Barbee and Linda Barling.
