David Warlick on Teaching in the 21st Century

I have been reading with interest David Warlick’s blog about teaching our youth the communication skills they need to succeed in the future. I agree with him when it comes to end of grade testing and how the United States keeps lagging further and further behind in our efforts to adhere to standards and accountability. It appears we are stuck in our own little world.

I was retesting some children today after their first failed attempt at the end of grade (EOG). It seemed odd to me that after 180 days of instruction and they did not pass they would be expected a few days later to take the test again and succeed. Low and behold, four of the seven did pass the second time around. I asked one of the students what happened on the first test and he said he had been angry the first time and just marked anything. Unfortunately, that may not be an isolated incident. Are we making our students more angry, anxious, and disgusted with learning? David said it best I think when he said, “All we are doing is a better job of preparing our children for the 1950s.”

When will we wake up?
