"The Brooke Ellison Story"---a story of Hope

Tonight I watched a movie about a young girl who was struck by a car when she was 11 years old and left a quadriplegic. The amazing determination, devotion, and love by her family, especially her mother, was an incredicable journey for both mother and daughter. Brooke’s mother Jean, not only took care of her physical needs after her accident, she traveled with Brooke to Harvard University. This was not just a story about a young woman who overcame adversity to achieve but about having hope and knowing that every day there are miracles happening to us. Sometimes we just don’t see those miracles.

Brooke majored in cognitive neuroscience, a dual concentration in psychology and biology. The topic of her thesis was Hope, which is something she believes is crucial to accomplishing one’s goals. Living out that thesis, Brooke graduated magna cum laude in June 2000. Today Brooke speaks to high school students and other groups, and has plans to attend graduate school. “Miracles happen,” she says. “They have happened to me, and they are happening to you. You need only look at the people in your lives to see them.”

She said it best. Whether it is parent, friend, teacher, counselor, or stranger on the street, someone has helped us all along our journey and we should never take their unconditional love for granted so I say to all those angels in my life, “Thank you.”
